Techniques to Reduce Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Separation anxiety in dogs results from a fear that the master will not return. Many dogs bark, cry or act out by chewing on furniture or causing other messes. While it may seem that there is not a cure for your dog, there are techniques and products that have the potential to reduce or eliminate separation anxiety.

The first technique to reduce separation anxiety is aimed at proving to your dog that you will always return. While your dog is watching, exit your house and close the door. Wait just a few seconds and then return. Go about your business in the house for a few minutes and then exit the house again. Once again, return in a few seconds. Continue to repeat this process but stay out for a bit longer each time. It may take several days or even weeks but your dog will begin to realize that you will always return.

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell. They associate smells with people, other animals and even events. You can use your dog’s sense of smell to help reduce her separation anxiety. For a few days, spray a bit of perfume or cologne in the air when you enter your house. Your dog will begin to associate the smell to you coming home. After your dog becomes familiar with the smell, begin to spray the perfume right before you leave the house. The smell will reassure your dog that you will be returning since she already associates the smell with you entering the house.

Another way to use your dog’s sense of smell to reduce her separation anxiety is to leave an article of clothing with your scent. Leave a shirt that you wore the day before on her bed or in her crate. The scent on the clothing will provide comfort for your dog.

When you are getting ready to leave the house do not make a fuss or say goodbye to your dog. Dogs do not understand the concept of goodbye. Saying goodbye only makes the master feel better. Your dog will become excited and enter a state of heightened anxiety if you make a big fuss before you leave. Also, when you arrive home do not give your dog a lot of attention right away. Enter the house and go about your business. After a few minutes you can play with your dog. These techniques allow your dog to learn that your entering or leaving the house is a normal everyday occurrence.

D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone is a product that helps reduce separation anxiety for some dogs. This product imitates the smell of a dog pheromone. The smell relaxes many dogs and can be successful at reducing separation anxiety as well as stress induced by thunder or fireworks. D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone comes in the form of a diffuser, a collar and a spray, none of which can be smelled by humans.

Do not become frustrated while trying to reduce your dog’s separation anxiety. Many dog owners try a few techniques before they see results. Some dogs respond quickly to these techniques while others take longer to show improvement. The key is to have patience and experiment until you find a technique that works for your dog.

  2. You neglect to discuss the other reasons dogs get so frantic- MOSTLY lack of exercise! If you leave a dog full of energy pent up in a house all day- they are going to get frustrated. Also leaving a dog with this sort of anxiety alone in the house "to have the run of it" is also leaving that anxious dog in charge.TOO much responsibility. Instead the dog should be crated- left in charge of only his cozy space and a few toys.

  3. Great advice, and proven to work with our latest dog. She was initally anxious and barked when left alone. Fortunately we had the flexibility of not leaving her for long periods of time until she could handle them. Very short absences (minutes) gradually building to a few hours worked and now she is fine left alone for up to three hours at a time.

  4. My daughter tried the leaving for a few seconds and trying to extend the time. The dog would urinate in his crate! Every time! After an hour walk the dog pooped on the carpet and peed on their bed. He went back to the pound.

  5. A dog with severe separation anxiety will not stand to be crated. I've been working with my dog for nearly a year now and have tried all of these things above. He continues to hurt himself, chew through doors, walls, and go into full panic mode every time I leave the house.

  6. I have done all the above things,, I had to go out of town for 36 hours. When I returned my husband told me our dog was not eating, was laying around, was acting ill. Once I got back home my first order of business was to take Rocky to the vet. My vet told me he was depressed. So now going out of town I take Rocky with me, in fear he will get ill again. I would love to hear more on this topic and how to handle it.

  7. To Anonymous' post of October 7, 2009 7:05AM...

My older dog is a rescue & we've had him for two years now. He has recently just started to have separation anxiety. We bought a crate to use when we are at work. Yes, he gets himself so worked up (I set up a camera for recording to see what was going on)he shakes, chews the cage, cries & tries to push himself out ot the crate, thus, scraping his nose to the point there is blood all over his blanket. Has anything worked for you yet? Need to know in FL.

  8. My dog has severe anxiety. I have tried all of the above and the one method that has worked tremendously is finding something to keep him occupied as I am leaving the house. For him, a peanut butter and cookie filled Kong works best. It takes his attention off the fact that I am leaving. He can finally be left uncrated and finally has stopped trying to escape through the doors and windows. This is a blessing, because at 10 years old, his hips are becoming too sore for a crate.

  10. My rescue, from a Kill-Shelter and formerly she was a Puppie-Mill Momma, went thru sep. anx. when in the crate/cage whenever I left. My vet said to try the "go out the door" method and keep extending the time. The difference was she was left OUT of the cage and all she did was jump up on the couch and go to sleep. Never chewed/messed/etc., and now stays alone for up to 8 hours. Yippie! She is such a good companion.

  11. Issues with my dog. Will scratch at his neck and or rub back and forth on the side of the couch. As well with scooting on the floor. Have video tapped him doing this and its only when we are not home. He is an American Bulldog with major allergies but somewhat is controlled though watching food ingredients.

  12. OUR WEIME WAS ALSO WROUGHT WITH SEP ANXIETY. NO CAGE COULD HOLD HIM HI WOULD BREAK OUT OFTEN HURTING HIMSELF. PUT IN A ROOM WITH A CLOSED DOOR HE WOULD TEAR AT THE DOOR. FINALLY WE MADE SURE WE TOOK HIM FOR A NICE WALK TO EXERCISE HIM, GAVE HIM A BONE OR KONG, SOMETHING TO KEEP HIM BUSY. BABY GATED OUR BEDROOM SO HE HAD FULL ROAM OF OUR ROOM/SENT/BED. COULD SEE OUT THE WINDOWS AND AT 1ST LEFT THE T.V. ON. WELL THINGS WENT GREAT!! ALTHOUGH HE WOULDN'T TOUCH THE TREAT TILL WE CAME HOME. TODAY HE HAS FULL ROAM OF THE HOUSE IS 7YRS OLD AND A WONDERFUL COMPANION. I'D SAY TRY SEVERAL TYPES OF THINGS, MIX IT UP IF YOU NEED TO AND BE PATIENT. THEY ARE PART OF THE FAMILY TOO! THANKS ALEXIS

  13. My youngest dog, 8 months, is ripping apart my house bit by bit. His anxiety comes from being in the hospital for a week with parvo, when he was not quite 3 months. How do you try to fix that? He hates to be alone. He does have two big brothers to hang with, but he needs human contact. He's only alone ( with his brothers) at night for 3-4 hours. During the day, only 2 hours, at most. Thanks for any help.

  14. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try this oun our foster dog who has HORRIBLE separation anxiety. It's so bad that he has been returned to the rescue group I volunteer with TWICE! He'll never find his "furever" home if I don't get this taken care of.

  15. Our dog would see suitcases, and we would all leave around the same time, but she didn't know I was only going to work, not on a trip like my parents, so she would start with the separation anxiety. I would come home to find stuff shredded around the house, and once she had diarrhea all over the carpet. After that, I would call in sick on days my parents left on a trip, and then she was ok.

  16. My dog has serious separation anxiety. The in and out exercise is a good one. We also have him on Reconcile, which is a medication apprved by the FDA for separation anxiety. We have crated him because he was taring up our carpet as well as jumping through windows, not that the crate helped any, he's pulled off the door completely breaking the welding, but we've clamped it and are now desenitizing him to the crate. Also you should desensitize your dog to any departure preparation you do such as getting your keys and putting on your shoes. Also you should not allow your dog to sit next to you or sleep in your bed, this allows your dog to realize that being separated from you is not a bad thing. Also reward your dog only when it is in a calm mood and make sure you are the one initiating contact not your dog. These are all techniques we are doing along with the medication and hopefully our dog will be cured and I hope my advice has helped someone else.

  18. I feel for all of you! My first dog of my own had terrible sep anx! We had to take her everywhere...work, shopping, out!! Was like a child...after a year of that and destruction to our home a friend suggested we get her a canine companion...we did with much trepidation that we'd have 2 escapees...but it worked!! They both stayed in their crates until we came home from work...never again did she panic! What a relief bc she was a sweet dog!

  19. We have a puggle who is so attached to me she literally follows me eveywhere. If we are in the car and I run in a gas station she will cry and yelp the entire time till I'm back. At the beginning we tried the crate when we were not home and she would be so violent she would get injured and poop in there everytime. Then we tried kitchen only and she would jump gate. Then we tried bathroom and she tore up floor. Then we tried free roaming and she chewed couch. (good thing she's cute) vet suggested giving her a benedryl before we leave with some peanut butter and then putting her in crate. She still cries for a few mins but now lays comforably for sometimes 8 hrs at a time when we are At work. We also recently got her a playmate (11week old lab) so I hope that will help also!!! Although if puppy comes near me she has to push him out of the way and get on my lap. Lol dogs are funny!!!

  20. Omg, this helped so much! Even reading the responses, one saying they had to get rid of their puppy, because of seperation anxiety! Wow... But for me, I got a puppy 3 days ago, and was soo attached to me that i couldnt even go out and eat. haha, i did though. But she was still crying! I tried that in and out method where you come in and go out, extending the time each time... Well yea... that didnt work(she would start crying right before i close the door). So then i tried that prefume method and it work amazingly! so now, after she got use to that, I tried the in and out. And SHE DIDNT EVEN CRY ONCE! AMAZING!! WOW THIS HELPED ALOT!!

  21. Hello every body, I hope this helps in some way, I got a toy fox terrier from a rescue, yes, a lot of energy, He has separation anxiety, first, I got for him a wire crate, I do not recomend wire crates for dogs with separation anxiety, they get hurt really bad, then I got for him a plastic crate, then he injured his nose , besides the crates are too small to leave them for long periods of time, do not use wire crates or plastic ones for more than 3 hours during the day, during all night is ok, because you are at home by then, then I got the idea of cointaining him with a leash of metal ( chain ), just give six foot and be careful not to have things around him because the chain might get tangled!, but now his neck is a little with no hair ( he is short hair ), because his collar is the plastic type and is causing some type of irritation... and now I got for him a kennel ( chain o'link type ) is a 6 x 4 kennel, it does not look great inside the house, but is working, just remember to exercise your dog everyday and leave a lot of toys when you are not at home with your dog, the kong toy work great, ahhh, and do not forget to leave the radio on !, I hope this helps !.,, have a great day !

  22. I had a year old foster German Shep with the same issues, she developed the skill of opening doors as a result. I did exactly the above suggestions and in about 2 weeks she learned that I did indeed return after I left.

In the meantime she was crated when I would leave for a long time and free roamed on shorter excursions. It took about a month total but her separation anxiety was much better.

What I also used was the DAP as well as "Peace & Calming" oils on her ears and just above her nose. Worked like a charm!

She's now in a loving home with 3 lil children and a stay at home mom, going through basic pup training and will be in agility if she passes.

You can teach an old dog new tricks :)

  23. Hi,

Whenever we would leave the house, we would always say to my beloved Miniature Dachshund, "We'll be back. You be good." And I swear he always understood what we said. And he was great then. If you did not tell him that you would be back, then he would get frustrated. We also always greeted him right away when we came home, so I disagree with the statement that you should not pay attention to your dog when you first arrive home.
